October 6, 2007 at 4:45 pmNo doubt, there are more important things that need to be fixed. It’s not a feature that would sell new licenses of FCP, and so it’s probably not a big priority. I would like to hear from anyone who has made a feature request for FCP and actually had it implemented. And I don’t mean a request like “We’d really like better color correction” where Apple just buys another company and adds some sort of “Send To” feature in FCP.

While I can’t claim personal credit for this, a few years ago FCP did NOT have multicam capability. I know that for me and many others on this list, not having multicam was a dealbreaker. Guess what? Apple listened and came up with a version of multicam that I think most people would agree is better than Avid’s. That came from alot of people making alot of noise about a much needed function.
So, don’t be so pessimistic. They do listen. Features are added. And occasionally, they even work! 🙂

October 6, 2007 at 8:20 pmYou’re right that I have a pretty cynical view of Apple’s approach to “upgrading” FCP. Not about the price – I’m sure I’m getting what I’m paying for and more – but about key professional features like a really solid Media Manager that is a very important, still not-quite-there implementation. It’s not just about little pet features I’d like, it’s about big stuff too. But thanks for having a more positive outlook; I’ll try to let it rub off on me.

October 7, 2007 at 9:32 amI can’t see what the problem is here. I’ve been using FCP since v.1 and never ever found this dissolve issue difficult to wrap my head around. If you don’t have the media, you can’t make a dissolve = simple.
Maybe iMovie is a better alternative for this kind of stuff? Personally, if I use a dissolve at all, I prefer keyframing b/c the stock dissolves are never pretty IMO.
I think if you’re missing the point of how the dissolve works, you’re probably missing a lot of how FCP works.
Why fight it?

October 8, 2007 at 4:07 pmHi
I am respondinjg here, although i have read this entire thread. it seems there is some confusion about transitions
Double clicking on a video dissolve opens it up in the source viewer where you can adjust the duration and whether is starts on the cut, ends on the cut, or straddles the cut.
right clicking on a video dissolve opens a windoe for altering the duration, so you can quickly adjust the length of your dissolve.
Double clicking on an Audio dissolve does the same thing as right clicking on a video dissolve, it opens a window for altering the duration
Right clicking on an audio dissolve opens a prefrence type window with choices as follows
duration, alignment (start, center, end). cut copy paste, O db at center or -3 db at center.
If you load a dissolve into the viewer from the effects window, thne change any parameter such as duration and alignment, then drag that effect into your browser (not the effects window) you can assign it as the default transition and quickly apply it any where. (you cna do this with any transition, either audio or video)
you can drag any transition from one clips to any other, and you can change its alignment as yu drag it.
if you hold down the option key you will drag a copy of the transition
there are many things i do not like about FCP, but the transitions seem to be pretty buttoned up.
the only thing that is really goofy is that you have to use a different keystroke combination for a crossfade on the audio track than the video track.. DUH! if the program is smart enought to know the difference, why cant it just default to making a crossfade on the ausio track when you press ctrl t??
oh yeah, and i hate the way you have to delete transitions separately form clips. or before you delete across them..that should be fixed ASAP! (in my opinion)
hope this helps

Perhaps an under statement… Its scary!
[Bob Flood] “right clicking on a video dissolve opens a windoe for altering the duration, so you can quickly adjust the length of your dissolve.”
Right clicking also lets you choose the transition alignment, i.e. center cut, start on edit, end on edit.

Yep, that is kind of silly.

on video dissolves, right clicking ONLY brings up the duration, at least on my box. 5.1.4
if you right click on Audio Dissolves ie crossfades, you then getadditional choices such as alignment.
hope this helps
bee eph
ps I think there would be less confusion, if the whole transition structure were less confusing, but maybe thats just me?

Something is wrong Bob, cuz you’re missing transition Alignment on right click. I am on ver. 6.0.1, but it been there since whenever. Here, take a peek for yourself…
