Sounds like you may have a corrupted file in your project. You’ve probably already tried this, but just in case you haven’t, go to the autosave vault & try booting from the last autosave from this project. If this comes up ok, then remember to immediately do a Save As & give the project a new name.

    All the best

Dave, thanks for being one of the two who were not so offended by my opinions that you were willing to offer a possible solution. The problem originally occurred when trying to start a new project, but also with many existing projects including ones from the AutoSave vault. Several days later, after repeatedly trashing prefs, restarting the G5, etc. it just mysteriously started working again (not as a result of anything I did). I can do some work now, but the problem was never really diagnosed or resolved so I expect it’ll happen again (this was the second time). Next time I’ll be sure to mention in my post how wonderful FCP is so as not to irritate the FCP Gods.
    Cheers.
