March 3, 2010 at 12:13 amClean OS install, fresh, no upgrade install for FCP, tidy font selection. It’s a crash every time. Fresh install of Decklink drivers help…. for a little while, then it is back to the same crashing problem everyone has mentioned.
Anyone figure out any workarounds?
Thanks in advance!

March 3, 2010 at 12:56 amNo problem here with a Kona3. Try unistalling the Decklink drivers completely and see if you can make it crash on using text tool. If not then it might be a Decklink problem.
Have you updated your FCS3 and OS since install? There was an OS update to 10.6.2 and FCP went to 7.0.1 a while ago.

March 24, 2010 at 5:25 pmI just struggled with this problem, too.
I fixed my permisssions, moved some fonts, reinstalled Blackmagic drivers… nothing helped. One thing I did notice is that I was in a DVCPRO HD 24p sequence, which I rarely use. So I tried Apple ProRes and it worked fine. Back to DVCPRO HD 60p, crashed. So I made my text while in ProRes and put it in the bin. Then I switched to DVCPRO HD 24p, made a new sequence, dragged it in and rendered it. No time to play with it more, already wasted lots of time but this will keep me going for now.
Hope this helps!

March 24, 2010 at 6:22 pmYou are right on with this fix. We do a fair bit of cutting dvcpro footage, but since we are doing more and more 5D/7D stuff, ProRes has working flawlessly for us.
But it is still a known issue, and I can make it crash every time. “They” should fix it, but I am fine with a work-around.
Great Advice!

June 5, 2010 at 10:30 amYes, I am having this problem.
I have tried most of the above suggestions and am holding out until I can complete this current project before changing to Snow Leopard and doing a fresh install of everything.
Currently on 10.5.8 and FCS3 (FCP 7.0.2) and making do with Motype and other solutions.
Looking forward to having CS5 as an alternative when upgrading later this year and considering a change from the ATI HD4870 to the Nvidia FX4800 too.
Justin.

October 1, 2010 at 10:15 pmI have been going crazy with this problem too. And I think I found an ANSWER. Well, not an answer but definitely a FIX.
Apparently for me it was a problem with my mac user account.
I created a new ‘test’ user account from scratch (System Prefs…Accounts…)
Tried opening FCP in this new user account and VOILA. No crash.Hooray.
