March 8, 2007 at 3:44 amA solution would be to buy Popwire “Compression Master” which is now under the name of Telestream “Episode”. This is an advanced video compression utility with which you could convert the h264 to DV with a timecode burn-in. You can also trim the in point so that the converted video starts at 10:00:00:00.
it’s 400 bucks…

March 8, 2007 at 4:26 am[bogiesan] “On the t/c render question:
All you need to do is apply the t/c filter to anything, ay a black slug, maybe not even that, and render it over a transparent background so you only see the numbers in a box (or the numbers only). Use a codec that supports alpha like Animation. Bringing that movie file back in and placing it on top of the video track will process much faste”Bogiesan had the right idea, sort of. No need for an alpha channel codec, though. Just apply the t/c generator filter to the slug. Render it. Export as Quicktime Move (make self contained). Apply this clip to video track 2 (you can reuse this clip over and over) . Crop as needed to reveal your video on track 1. Render and export. Rendering of this effect is fast, compared to the rendering of the TC filter.
There are several ways to perform a crop. Read “Creating Motion Effects in the Canvas” beginning on page III-236 of the help manual if you dont know how to do this.
[bogiesan] “Still faster, render yellow or white t/c characters out over black. Import the movie and use the Screen blend mode. It requires no processing of the alpha channel but it might not be as crystal sharp as you want. “
He needs to render this, as this is for export for an audio system, not for continued work in FCP. Rendering blending modes or keys are slower than rendering a crop, usually, so I wouldnt recommend this.

March 8, 2007 at 4:50 am>so we get the QTs in h264 with linear pcm audio (non compress) from production/ editors in another place so we get DVDs with the QT and the OMF.
don’t know if my 2c will help here, but it sounds like our audio inclined friend is at a remote location from the video work.
it seems the reason the video guys are spending so much time and energy compressing the video in h.264 (a delivery format) is that they are having to fit on a DVD … DV is probably not an option.given that you just have to repurpose the the file in multiple formats, and don’t actually need to “edit” anything, then FCP may not be the tool you need.
“Episode” from Telestream, as mentioned below, might be a better bet, given its ability to add BITC (Burnt-In Time Code) -

March 8, 2007 at 3:19 pmah, two strikes. Rats, Whew, good thing you’re around to clear this up, poor guy could have wated freakin’ hours rendering his t/c. Hours.
But at least I got the H.264 nonsense correct.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

The best solution would be to hire some goons to take care of the folks that are putting him through this nonsense.
Of course, I could also ask why dont they output the damn thing to tape, then redig with the character display on. And use the damn DV codec instead of H263.
