Fake depth of field in post? CAN it be done?

Here are a couple of stills of the footage – one shot flat and one with the lens. I’m scanning through the rushes now to see if I can find any shots without the actor stood there….:S

OK folks – massive thanks for all your advise. I’ve included a before and after still. I wasn’t able to find frames where the actor wasn’t in shot so I’ve duplicated the shot, drawn a mask around the top ‘layer’ and used a mixture of Gaussian blur and vignetting to gain this outcome.

looks good. the only small point; the bit of wall inside her arm/body space under the hand is still sharp. would anybody notice that during playback? have a look and see. might need more work on the mask… ed

Have a look at this. It’s called a shift tilt effect, but with clever masking and two tracks you could create a DOF effect you are seeking:

I see no reason this couldn’t be accomplished generating the key in AE and exporting the video from AE w/ alpha channel. I really can’t wait to try it. Or am I missing something?
