Yes, because that external drive supports USB 3.0 and is backward compatible with USB 2.0. So the drive is capable of supporting USB 3.0 but your 2009 MacBook only supports USB 2.0 and Firewire 400 so any USB 3.0 drive that you connect to it will revert to USB 2.0 speed. If you used a Firewire 400 drive it would be a bit faster. The 2009 MacBook Pro supports USB 2.0 and Firewire 800 which is twice as fast as Firewire 400. That is really what you need for video editing but I understand you have what you have. No matter what you do, it’s going to be slow going.
