October 19, 2010 at 4:10 amMan, who would’ve guessed 15 years ago that today Apple would be setting record profits and Premier would no longer be a POS 🙂
But performance aside, which do you prefer cutting with?

Toronto”I have to say I find CS5 faster and the ability to auto update Premiere graphics/FX while working in Photoshop or After Effects is brilliant. There are still some features I dislike about Premiere, but overall I find it faster and easier to navigate, particularly if you remap common keyboard commands like default transitions, next/previous edit, etc for your left hand. I also think Final Cut’s “monochromatic” GUI don’t help my way of working. (Don’t flame me!). I do wish Apple would release a kick-ass update to Final Cut. They really are like molasses at the moment in pro apps.

October 19, 2010 at 6:13 pmThanks for the detailed post Peter! I’m also hoping that Apple steps up it’s game with an overhauled FCP.
Although I’m pretty wedded to FCP at the moment, I’m trying to keep an open mind for newer/better tools for the job.
That being said, my choice of editing package is largely determined by the people hiring me, not the other way around. I’m guessing it will be a while before I start hearing producers ask “can you cut in Premier?”

To be faire, not completely. They did a great job with the last Logic Pro version. And with Motion, Color, Soundtracks… but it is true, we want real REAL TIME for FXs!
MacBook Pro 2,5GHz, 4GBram, eSata G-Raid nTB, dual 23″ monitors, FCS3, Modul8… Nuendo 4/ Live/Reaktor 5/Euphonix/JLCooper/Motu i/o/2 G4 PowerBooks/multichannel surround audio setup.

Just because they are not as fast as YOU want then to be does not mean they are slow. On average Apple releases a new version of FCP ever 18 months to 2 years, its only been about a year since the last realize of FC. How is that slow? Its NORMAL.

As pointed out by Tim….EVERY company that does editing software has that schedule….Avid, Adobe, Apple. Some of them are just mid-term elections….

October 25, 2010 at 12:15 pmTraditionally speaking this is absolutely true. Adobe has a nearly 15 year track record of shipping major versions between 18 and 24 months. With CS3 to CS4 the video team had special demands to sync up with the rest of Creative Suite and so did a release in 15 months.
However, we do like to keep you guessing… 😉

I’m not sure why but… If you Export to Quicktime Movie from FCP at current settings and then use QT 7 Pro to export that to H264 (or pretty much any other codec) is always faster than an export Using Quicktime Conversion directly from FCP.e.g. DVCPRO HD 720p60 (rendered) sequence of 1 min 22 secs in length conversion to 640×480 H264 letterbox.
Using QT Conversion from FCP took 8 minutes
conversely Export to QT movie using current settings took 46 secs
with subsequent export using QT7 Pro took a further 2:59
So less than half the time. Quality looks exactly the same. I do this all the time using RED 2K or Panasonic 720p as the source. QT7 Pro is always faster at compressor conversions
Anyone know why that is?Ash
