Exporting a reference file

I think it may have something to do with security… Ref movies can be spoofed. I agree with Mathieu though. Fcpx is very fast exporting a prores master file if you have been working in prores the whole way and have taken advantage of some bkg rendering along the way.

I always used to export QT ref movies on the way to dvd encoding. Yes, it was faster, but I can’t tell you how many dead QT ref files I have because one or more renders disappeared. More than once I went back to a retired project and wished I had the entire rendered file.

I expect that the QT ref file becomes a bit less important when your timeline can’t match the codec of the clips. I always loved the idea of dropping my clips into a timeline and when I export, any footage with no modification gets exported without any conversion. Same ones and zeros, right?

I often edit xdcam 35 footage, and export out an xdcam clip of my final edit. I gotta think even the footage I don’t modify is getting converted and re-converted.

Long gop footage edited puts the gops out of order. To lay back, the gops have to go back in order. Thats why you’d get that painful conform with 7 and hdv. I haven’t edited in xdcam, I would think it is a similar procedure.

A quick correction on my tests. FCP X are FCP 7 are very different animals, and this wasn’t a true apples to apples test. For example because the video clips were DV codec, FCP X wouldn’t actually transcode them into ProRes 422 until the time of the Share/Export. Hence the FCP X ProRes export being was slower in my tests.

Just a quick experience to encourage you to use YouTube of Vimeo to post proofs.

Yesterday I started cutting a 40 second promo for an upcoming client presentation. Then I got a call that I had to leave the office right way, so I clicked Share > YouTube, hit return and then I put on my coat, my backpack and as I walked about the door. I locked the office and then pulled up YouTube on my phone. Sure enough the video already uploaded, this was after about 2 minutes passed. I watched it as I walked outside and then texted a link to my fellow creative director for review.

This was all accomplished in a matter of less than 5 minutes. I can understand that your desire is to export a reference movie, or even a finished movie to compressor, and then upload via email. However, I think the existing workflow in FCP X very well thought out by Apple and we should take a bit of moment to try their methods. They have made posting a proof literally 3 clicks and have made what should be a simple thing a simple thing indeed.

All compressions using the tools from FCPX, Motion, and Compressor fail. Reference movies would allow me to use Quicktime 7 until I can figure out what is happening. But it isn’t possible so I get to enjoy 5 failed compressions of a 2 hours product in a row.

How would you use Quicktime 7?

Are you getting an error when exporting from FCPX? If so are you getting an error on a specific frame? Sometimes you can have one bad piece of media that is causing the trouble, or an old plugin, etc. You might try exporting your project in sections and then recombine in QuickTime 7.
