Two 23″ inch monitors or one 30″ monitor
Posted by Tony Connoly on December 20, 2010 at 4:00 amWhat is your preferred way of editing video, a single 30″ monitor(2560×1600) or two 23″ monitors (each 1920×1200)?
Personally, I like the single monitor approach, even though it’s pricier, because I don’t like moving my neck back and forth between two monitors.

December 20, 2010 at 4:21 amEveryone is different. I like using two. But I actually wok in one and use the other as a fullscreen monitor (which i calibrate for grading). Then if I am file managing I can use the two screens to separate and divide my folder windows. Most of the time i am not editing the second monitor is not being used. 30″ would break my wrist moving from one end of the “earth” to the other.

December 20, 2010 at 8:26 amI like multiple monitors, I use two computer monitors, depending what I’m doing I can make one monitor just the timeline and move the rest of the stuff over to the second monitor or shift panels however it suits me, I also use the second monitor for multitasking like opening the editor in one monitor and AFX or Encore or Photoshop in the second one, I also use a third monitor which is a widescreen 1080p tv to monitor the video output of which ever program on the fly.

December 20, 2010 at 6:04 pmI have two 28 inch Viewsonic monitors which work great. I keep all but the preview monitor on the left and enlarge preview on the right and/or use the right for multi-tasking. I have not been able to have my outboard JVC HD monitor incorporated but will now with the addition of an Nvidia Quadro 4000 and a Matrox MX02 MiniMax. It’s a lot of real estate but it works well for me.

December 22, 2010 at 12:37 pmHmmm… This is a tough one for me to answer. I use four monitors.
The Adobe applications have many panels and I find that with a 24″ flanked by two 17s, I can get pretty much all the panels I need to see “top layer” in AE, Encore, and Audition (and of course, Premiere Pro, where having the scopes open all the time on one 17 really helps me).
A 30″ is a great work surface… Perhaps 2-23″ (or 24″…whatever) might be easier for you to envision using if they were over/under instead of side by side? Nothing says you have to take two widescreen monitors and stretch them out horizontally…
My 30″ is my overlay monitor and it sits on top of everything else…and it’s also my main Photoshop monitor. (I think you can see the basic system in back of my bio pic.)

December 24, 2010 at 6:23 amI find my 30-incher indispensable in pixel-peeping of hi-res still photos, yet often crave for a 2nd monitor when previewing video.
