    Hey Andy,

I had the “Out of Memory” error as well recently and I couldn’t figure out what was causing it. I found your post, while recently adding some new photos to the timeline and one of the images was CMYK. I switched it to RGB and it works fine now.

Thanks for your notes, have a great day!

    Andy,
Many thanks, my problem is fixed.
This is an issue that plagues us all at one time or another and FCP does nothing to assist in offering an issue or solution!! Time passes enough to make the last solution found has long been forgotten.
Anyway, I wanted to add my experience in case it helps others.
I’d say, for me the main factor in creating this issue is using stills in a format that gives the RAM way too much work. Never mind how much space you have created in the settings. This occasion was three JPEGS I had used Photoshop to res up in DPI/Pixels to enlarge, but having read your pointers it made me think I need to res up using pixel ratio and keep the image to 72 DPI/Pixels … bang, there you go, fixed!! The time line now renders with no issue!
In the bigger picture, in the old days when I was learning, I often had this issue because I had a mix of media formats incompatible to the project. Best tip I can offer to all is make sure all you media is prepared and matching the project time line, ProRes for a ProRes time line e.g. PNG’s a good, make sure stills are RGB 72dpi, Audio files WAVE or AIFF… etc etc. That’s make your edit trouble free and whatever size your ram or machine, however many cuts or how large the project is, you should have a smooth ride.
NB – I have seen it suggested it might be too many plug ins, I’m pretty sure that’s not the issue.
    Hope that’s useful.
    Best, Gavin
