Ethan, you can just select your long clip in the Event Library, right-click and choose Open in Timeline.
There, you can color-correct the entire clip. Now your Event version is corrected, and and sections of it that you add to your project will contain the correction.

Cool, I’ll have to try that since it would be faster. However, if you go that route will later tweaks on the long source clip in the Event Browser (via “open in timeline”) ripple down automatically to all instances in the storyline? It’s probably a good idea to make a copy of the original first, too.

I’m debating whether it’s better to color correct the long clips up front, or wait until picture lock and use the FIND tool to apply across all instances. I suppose either way is alright.

As for effects and features in general, I get the feeling Apple designed FCPX as a minimal platform for plugin makers to build upon to make it ‘Pro’. A smart way to let other people make your product better without having to pay them. I imagine we’ll see some real wizardry emerging very soon.

As per my post, no. A later change has no impact on clips already added to the timeline.

One well hidden related feature is FCP 7’s old feature to copy a color correction to the next clip or the clip after that is present in FCP X. They are hidden in the custom keyboard editor, with no shortcut applied.

I guess that makes sense since such a feature could just as easily give you a modification when you don’t want one, as well. I think I’m better off waiting to do color until after the edit, then apply them using meta-tags and the FIND command.
