Whichever is faster by benchmarks, I suppose. I wouldn’t obsess over minor speed gains, since it will be obsolete by the time you buy it anyway.

Sorry, on the Windows side, I just buy Dells (Intel) because of the tech support (business support, not consumer) and the fact that adding new drives doesn’t void the Dell warranty. So I can’t comment on Intel vs. AMD. If Adobe approves both under “system requirements”, then you’d have to look to the benchmarks, or someone more tech-inclined could chime in.

Are your images too big? Do they have to be as big as they are?
Do a test render every night before you go to bed. Don’t waste any nights.
Pre-render any layers that have a non-animated effect applied, such as a blur or ramp.

To get an idea of how long the project will take to render, drop it into a test comp and speed it up by, say, 400% and render at 1/4 res. Then you multiply that render time by 4 (time) times 4 (res) to get an idea of what the final render time will be.

When rendering, leave open the “render details” info in the render queue to see what’s slowing you down.

By the way, what is in this comp that’s taking so long?
    – 3D lights?
    – really big layers?
    – camera depth of field?
    – which effects?

No, I don’t use 3d for this animation. but I do use large size images, some images I use for the background are 1500×1500 pixel adobe illustration vector file, is it too big of a size? I really don’t feel so. not much effects though, mostly transforms, a few drop shadows, a few expressions, motion blurs, color correction, that’s all I guess.

Find the slowest part of the comp and do a short render, watching the render details in the render queue. See which layers take the longest to render. “Retrieving frame” delays mean the disk holding the file is slow or the file is pretty big. Or that the disk is fragmented.

Also, if you can, try shrinking that AI file down in Illustrator to 800 px wide and see if that helps.

As of version 7.0 there are some processes and effects that are accellerated by the OpenGL capabilities of the GPU – even when rendering final output.

Example: Looks Suite in Magic Bullet 2.1 renders about six times faster with a good OpenGL 2.0 card (only in 8bpc though).

So OpenGL accelleration isn’t only limited to previewing. I know Knoll Light Factory is now also GPU enabled, but I don’t know for sure which Adobe plug-ins are currently benefitting.

Not sure if anyone mentioned GridIron Nucleo in this string, but I purchased that plug-in last week and on my Dual AMD Opteron system, in many cases, it has nearly doubled the speed of renders and ram previews.

Not so much where illustrator art is in the project, but outside that, major improvements.

BTW – for my Money, it’s always going to be AMD over intel. I’ve found over the years that pound for pound they perform better. I have an intel machine with a “comperable” processor and parts, and it’s not nearly the performer of my AMD based system.

    To continue the off-topic:

[Aharon Rabinowitz] “or my Money, it’s always going to be AMD over intel.”

At the moment, yes. I’m running Opteron workstations and Athlon FX X2 machines here.

But Intel has cleaned up their act and they’re producing faster, cooler and cheaper CPU’s than AMD now.

So either way, this is all good news, because we need that competition.
