  • Edit text on old .ai file

Posted by Danna Chiasson on July 10, 2024 at 7:42 pm

I have some old .ai files. File like below may have 75 to 100 layers.

I did not create and do not recall where I downloaded from.

Was an occasional user of AI CS6.

Could use some help / advise on how to change the text.

    Hey,

could you upload the AI file so I can check how it was built? Just want to be sure that it’s an editable text first of all because otherwise you would have to rebuld it, but in my opinion if it’s not editable it would be better just to rebuld the file if you have the font since you basically would need just the text and to apply a 3D extrusion, then a stroke to the top layer and you could have the same file. But the most important element in this design would be to have the font file so you can retype the text in any case.

I just checked the document and if you install this font in your computer you’ll be able to edit the text in Adobe Illustrator

    https://www.dafont.com/santhony.font

Let me know if that works. Thx!

    Thanks

I downloaded but it gives 2 fonts and I could only install one.

How do you find what font is being used ?

    ——————————————————————————–

This file has over 300 layers …. don’t know where to start.

    Why the 300 + layers ?

Can this style be saved ( simplified ) to use on any text I wish ?

You can install any of the files. It’s the same font is 2 formats, so it doesn’t really matter which one you install.

I don’t really see where you are looking for to see 300 layers. If you go to “layers” you’ll see just 4 layers and one of them is Editable text group “Edit this” layer. If you want to replace the text or change the font you just have to select the layer and change this text.

    Thanks

Not sure how you get 4 layers …. scrolled through 8 page downs marking bottom of each page in the layers panel

In which illustrator version are you opening the file?

    AI CS6

I played with it long ago but really not up to speed …. more familiar with photoshop cs6

That’s the problem. Illustrator CS6 was released in 2012. That’s 12 years ago so the functionality of the layers and integrations of the newer versions don’t work correctly with previous versions. If you want to edit the text in that file you need a newer version of Illustrator.
