[Barry Green] “It’s not the price that does it, it’s that it has to be an actual US-sourced unit which was received and inventoried by Panasonic US, and then sent to an authorized dealer”

Funny, cuz you’d never hear one of the sales associates for “pricerite camera” or whoever tell you that. Glad I went with B&H.

I just bought mine from Abes of Maine and so far I haven’t have any problems. However I went to the authorized dealers zip-code @ Panasonics website and now I’m scared because they do not appear to be an authorized dealer. Any suggestions? I could still returned since I just receive it yesterday.

No, you sure won’t! In fact, if you ask them if the camera has a warranty, they may tell you “yeah, it has a full US warranty.”

Note they didn’t say “manufacturer’s warranty”! So when you get it, you may find out that the “US warranty” is FROM THEIR STORE — i.e., you’d have to send it back to them and trust THEM to do the repair. Yeah, sure. And they justify it by saying “hey, we’re in Brooklyn, that’s in the US, so it’s a US warranty.”

You may or may not have a legitimate US unit. Was The DVX Book in the box? Was the Magic Bullet Editors software in the box? If both of those are in there, then you probably have a legit unit, which would be eligible for warranty coverage.

If neither item was in the box, then you got hosed with a grey-market unit.

And be ready when you try to return it — they may hit you up for a 15% “restocking charge” — that’ll mean you have to pay them about $500 just to take it back!

If those items were in the box, then you’re probably fine. Try applying for the rebate on Panasonic’s website, it should work. And if that’s the case, you shouldn’t have any reason to need to return the unit, it’s probably a genuine US unit.
