You’re right about the PAL feature, that’s kinda cool. However, unlike guys that spell color with a “u”, I don’t do a whole lot of PAL here in the states though. Matter of fact, haven’t done a single PAL production ever. I’m sorry, but I sure like to see the TC readout as I work, not some plastic lid. Dare I mention balanced audio? And that DSR-11 shuttles like a DOG, and gets on and off the heads like molasses. FireWire device control plain ol’ sucks too. Gimme RS-422 any ol’ day. I’m sure you guys agree with me along some of these lines, no?

I just don’t like the deck. If it is the IDEAL deck for you, then rock on. I just think that there are superior decks out there and the 11 gets more praise than is due.

Plus, ya’ll gotta allow me my opinion. 😉

[Kevin Monahan] “I’m sorry, but I sure like to see the TC readout as I work, not some plastic lid.”

Yep, so do my clients, that’s why I turn on the Display and let them watch it on my NTSC monitor. Again, my machines are in another room so on-board TC display doesn’t matter and I just use FCP’s TC display when editing.

[Kevin Monahan] “Dare I mention balanced audio?”

If Firewire is your workflow (like mine) then why the need for balanced audio? The only need I see for that is for a dubbing station or for feeding an analog only NLE or if it’s being using in a Linear suite. I’ll take digital audio via Firewire over balanced audio.

Really don’t see that the deck is significantly slower than other decks. It’s definitely faster than my old UVW-1800 but slower than the Panasonic AJ-H1200A, though for $32k, the 1200A better be faster. I guess I just don’t notice that the deck is holding me up at all as far as being slow to respond.

Of course, that’s one of the beauties of the Cow. Real people working with real equipment giving real opinions.

I have a Sony DSR-1500A which works really well in my situation. Plays DV, DVCam and DVCPro 25, records DV or DVCam, and with the optional cards, it has inputs and outputs for composite, component, SDI and firewire. I’ve been doing more dubs to/from DV and this keeps me from tying up the AJA IO or FCP as a signal converter. Nothing against the other decks mentioned but this one has a lot of pro features that make it very flexible.
