The PC laptop works fine. There is no problem with file sizes when transferring P2 to a FAT32 drive. Long takes are fine, as long as you don’t exceed the total capacity of the drive. The 4GB limit is observed in the P2 system, so long takes are composed of multiple files. After all, P2 cards are also formatted FAT32.

    Final Cut Pro 6.0.5, Mac OS-X 10.5.6, Quicktime 7.6, Adobe Prod Prem CS4, G5 Quad 2.5, Kona-LHe V6, 8.5GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7800-GT 256MB, G-RAID 2x1TB FW800, 6TB RAID-5 (Enhance E8-ML, Highpoint 2322), Panasonic HVX-200P P2. Also MBP 17″ Core 2 Duo 2.5, 4GB, GeForce 8600M GT 512MB.

My good ‘ol MBP is still running Tiger since it works great for offloading P2 cards with the Duel. That’s all I use it for.

I’m actually contractually bound to run fcp 7. We shoot 4-7 fashion shows a day and there are multiple shooter/editors working on the project. Project files are passed back and forth every day and if everyone is not on the version our clients and other editors are on, the collaborative process would not work. As fo the OS upgrade, I realize that I can live without it. The problem is that it has already been done to out traveling edit systems, thus the need to find another solution. On hindsight, I would not have done it. Reverting is probably the best solution. It’s not feasible to take two computers with each shooter editor since we are already maxed out on gear that we can carry with us to all of the cities we shoot in. Thanks fir your input though. It’s always greatly appreciated.

    Best, joel

FCP 7 runs very well on Leopard. I have it going on three machines.

How about getting 2 real cheap old Powerbooks that have the old card slot, and use them as the card readers. I say 2 because you would want a back up. Not the best solution but it would work.

I think a lot of people are waiting for that thing, says it ships tomorrow, guess we will see.

Joel, it sounds like you got a major production going with high stress, to be frank with you Duel is not the device in that situation, You have to reboot a lot and failure rate of the device is such that it is always recommended that you have a back up. The old powerbooks are the cheapest way to go. But the Panasonic or if you can get the Sonnet would be well worth the $.

A PC running Mac Drive can read and write to Mac formatted external drives. Do not go near FAT32.

    Cowians,

I’ve decided to go with the Panasonic 5 slot card reader (I got a great deal on one)I made the commitment long ago to the P2 work flow so I feel that I should do it right and keep it all Panasonic. No sense in being cheap when my reputation and client footage are on the line. Thanks for all of your support and advice. I love all of your creative solutions. The innovation you can find on the cow always amazes me!

    Best,
    Joel

Very smart. The cost of the Panasonic reader still is cheaper than the cheapest pro VTR you will ever find.

It’s the cost of doing business and they work great.
