I just wanted to add one more detail. My capture drive is the same drives I was using in my old computer. I just reraided them and formated them.

Ok decided to try capturing with another program to isolate the problem. I used Virtualdub and there were no dropped frames. So it may be safe to say that the problem is in premiere. In premiere one of the things I notice is that the camera timecode and capture duration both in the capture window have a “counting pause” when capturing. I captured the duration as an example you can take a look here to see. https://www.somamediaarts.com/Temp/CaptureTimecodeGlitch.avi
Is this normal? Anyone have any ideas why i’m dropping frames when capturing in premiere?

You write that the dropped frame problem you experienced with Premiere capture did not recur with a VirtualDub capture.

Was the capture drive used the same in both tests?

If the answer is “no” have you tested changing your Premiere Capture Scratch Disk to the one used with VirtualDub?

At least, this should tell you whether your Premiere capture drive is at fault.

Yes the capture drives were the same. I made sure settings matched.

In premiere you have the Device Control in the lower right and if you hit options and select your camera. I am trying to find out because i have tested on the DM-XL1s and Generic and both yeild the same results. (“laggy timecode in premiere ” and 2-7 dropped frames across one hour of tape.) Would Device control settings have any effect on the timecode issue?

    Hi Tom,

I would try ScLive of http://www.scenalyzer.com.

It is simply the best DV capture utility in the business and is far better than the one in Premiere on top of having many additional features.

You may download a free trial version and, if you buy the license, it costs

OK I just wanted to thank everyone for the help. I really think its a cool thing how people help other people out online. Thanks all.

So I figured it out. After running test after test and feeling like this is way more complicated then it could possible be, I started changing setting in the device control. So I went into the Device control and switched from XL1s (which is the camera I have) to XL1. When I switched the “laggy time code” and dropped frames disappeared. One of my early test was switching the deivce control to genereic and had the same issue which made me thing that this was not the problem.

Anyway thanks all and good luck
