February 22, 2006 at 9:55 pm[Zatoichi] “There’s no render time in Avid, which, for me, is a HUGE plus. Much time is saved.
What ?? I am working on avid pro and I have to render everything. Even importing a qt dv film gives me rendering while this takes no time in fcp. FCP uses quicktime as native format which is a HUGE bonus. If you want to critisize FCP you have to use valid arguments.
Also, if you’re buying a home editing system, bear in mind that part of what your paying for in a Mac is the shiny, sleek metal box encasing the computer system. The computer’s pretty, but the price isn’t.
A valid point is that you pay for everything working quite smooth. Our avids at job doesnt even work with the scrollwheels on my mouse.. This might be a conicidense.. but our macs just work.

February 22, 2006 at 10:36 pmI’m talking about rendering within the sequence, which FCP does take up more time than Avid.
I’m sure your Mac work great, mac’s are perfectly good computers. My recommendation to save money was for those who can’t afford a dual Mac G5 yet still want to edit. When I bought an editing system I couldn’t afford a mac, so I bought a PC and it works exactly like it’s supposed to. This is after everyone (all Mac owners mind you) preached that it would implode.

February 23, 2006 at 1:40 amI think that Moviola’s are for “real” editors and Avid’s are for computer dorks…..what an ignorant old school way of thinking…..Im glad that Im not cornering myself as an “artist” and tying myself to a machine for my art….how silly….people act like they invented the thing and take is personally.

February 24, 2006 at 3:10 pmIf your adrenaline is crashing that often, I would talk to Avid about that. I’ve been using mine for a year and it’s steady as a rock. Almost everyone I have talked with who has one loves the machine.

February 24, 2006 at 4:29 pmAvid seems to be very slow to evolve. Probably comes from alpha dog mentality, since they were on top for so long before the new breed of NLE’s came along and perhaps don’t recognize the new guys as a threat to their market share.
Went to a panel on editing at a film conference a year ago. On stage were about 10 editors with various years of experience ranging from first feature to 40+ years of film editing. None of them edited actual film anymore (steenbeck, Moviola, etc..), some had edited with Avid in the past, and all were currently editing with FCP.
Overall, an NLE is just a tool to accomplish a specific task…and being well versed in the serious players will help to select the right one for the job…often there are other factors involve such as budget (FCP at >$1k versus Avid at <$1k+), interoperability with other facets of post, etc.... Erik -

February 24, 2006 at 6:15 pmWe’re in constant contact with Avid. They mostly tell us “yup, that’s a problem” or “we’re working on that.” There are many issues with Adrenaline right now that Avid is aware of. Most annoying is the constant release of buggy patches. As far as everyone loving the Adrenaline, that has not been my experience. They have an uphill battle to convince early adopters to trust them on new relases in the future. Many I’ve talked to are feeling more than a little bagged on the Adrenaline, although it seems to be getting better.
They are definitely feeling the heat from our end and are working their behinds off to fix it.

February 13, 2014 at 1:19 amWas searching for an answer on something else and found this old message thread – and other similar debates. Wish Apple had shown the commitment to professional editors that editors had shown to Apple.
So, I guess the answer to the question in the subject line is…yes.

February 13, 2014 at 9:29 amAhhh. How time flies. Final Cut was the dominating NLE in Norway for quite a few years, but after FCPX was released, people have moved on to Avid-Premiere. FCP 7 is still in use at the company, but I think this year will be the last.
