July 12, 2005 at 11:56 pmFor the football field, I created a very long field marker graphic in AI. I also made a series of circles in AI – 6 circles by 4 I think…I brought all of them in to AE and put them into 3D space. I made the field marker graphic the flat plane and put the circles up in the air over it to simulate the lights of the stadium. I used Knoll Light Factory’s Spectacular to put the lens flares on the cirlces to make them really pop.
I also made a particle effect in Combustion of flashbulbs going off to give the effect of people in the stands taking pictures. I added some red smoky atmosphere along the sidelines to fill out the sides.
I animated the camera going down the field, dodging the frames of video…and that’s it…

July 13, 2005 at 2:29 amNow I need Combustion, Invigorator, Knoll Light Factory… Just kidding.
To be honest I chose AE over Combustion. Oh well, learn as I go. I would imagine that what I do have will still allow me to do decent work.

July 13, 2005 at 9:21 amThanks for the explanation. Wow, you did it with good ol’ fashinoed hard work! Me, I was sitting there thinking how to do it procederally using particles and expressions in 3D 🙂
I did something similar once in Maya. Bunch of images flew thru space and all “rained” down on a surface in a perfect grid like order. At the end of this “image rainfall” the camera pulls back and reveals it’s a mosaic of images that make up a giant logo.
Took me 3 days just to get the mechanics of it using particles, soft bodies, goals and lot’s of expressions linked to sliders for tweaking. But once the “engine” was done it could be modified and controlled quickly and easily.
Your results look great.

July 13, 2005 at 2:59 pmI have Combustion but really don’t use it that much…in fact, I really only ever used it for particles, but now that I have Particular, I rarely open it up…AE does everything that I need.

August 28, 2005 at 3:38 pmLove the reel Christian – one more question on it! Your stadium lights – I know you said you used Knoll Spectacular on your lights (imported from AE). I’m doing something similar, but can’t get Spectacular to work with anything white. I saved my lights/circles from AE as everything from eps to ai to psd, and applied Spectacular in AE. They seem a bit brighter, but nothing like the flare coming from your lights. Am i doing something wrong with my lights? If I choose a color other than white, the edges of my circles become that color, but there is no flare… TIA.
