August 10, 2015 at 5:57 pmWow. Thanks, John! Just to be clear, do you know if this camera is similar to the one used on the Phantom 3 Standard? It’s the on board camera, not a Go Pro? Great video, too.

August 10, 2015 at 10:59 pmWow, great info, John. So do you just put the 4k footage directly into Vegas? Is there any work around? And could you provide me a small sample for me to download and test? I would mainly use this for shooting exteriors of houses for sale. Do you really think the additional features are worth it over the lower price for the Standard considering I’m not going to use it (never say never…) for much other than flying around houses? The Standard already has some really good features, like live video to your phone and the ability to autopilot around a set point, which would make it easy for me to get it to do a semi-circle around a house.

August 11, 2015 at 1:10 amWow! I just researched that a little. If I understand, the remote control of the phantom is separate from the remote control of the camera right? Is all the Phantom 2 the same as the Phantom 3 Other than the 3 comes with gimble and camera? I have a GoPro Hero 4 Black already. I know I cant control it at a mile away like you can control the phantom. How far can you control the 4k camera you have? Also the gopro app doesn’t give me a really great preview live but is totally usable. You get a 4k or 1080 preview live with your camera? If I put my GoPro on a Phantom, I would have to use the gopro app intead of the DJI app right?

August 11, 2015 at 9:22 pm[John Laird] “Here is the link to the file you requested. It is 1920 by 1080 downrezzed in vegas so you will be able to play it back without a 4 k monitor and video card.”
I don’t believe that’s what Angelo wanted. It sounds like he wanted the actual file from the camera so that he can see if he can work with it on his computer.

Yes, that’s exactly what I meant.

August 16, 2015 at 2:52 pmYou might want to look at the comments on this B&H article about the Phantom 3 and DJI in particular.
Unveiled: DJI Phantom 3 Standard
Three people posted that their products don’t work and their customer service is he worst. Here is one comment:
Beware of DJI, their service sucks and they specialize in dodging issues with their email only customer service. I have spent 3000. with them and I am totally disatisfied.
I’d be very cautious of their products.

August 17, 2015 at 10:35 pmI hate to say it, but it sounds like I should at least hold off on the drone.

August 18, 2015 at 2:30 amWell… at least on that one. Get a drone that accepts a GoPro. Then you won’t have to worry about the quality of the camera.

August 20, 2015 at 12:05 amI see. I just thought that that gets more complicated because the DJI’s own camera is well stabilized. I have no experience with drones so this is still something I’d want to research.

August 20, 2015 at 4:59 pmInteresting news. https://www.squaretrade.com/ offers warranties on electronics you purchase. I called them and they cover drones. I asked about what a $1000 drone warranty would cost for 3 years, and it’s $209.99. And he said it covers everything except accidental damage.
I read other people say that they got their claims processed and paid for quickly with them, so that makes the decision easier for me (since my client is paying for it up front and basically leasing to own to me. Otherwise I still wouldn’t do it).
Edit: I went ahead with the order and a warranty for a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced with a 1080p camera. I’ll let you all know how it goes.
