This is true. We have made a test with subtitles (many people with many different machines and configurations). Rendering the timelime is really slow and can be even about 100!!! times slower than in legacy.
So as Simon you adviced: don’t render the timeline while working, only render automatically on export.

I wasn’t aware the option was available in the same way in FCP 7!

Certainly when I’ve done this before in 7 it didn’t seem as quick.
