If you have windows on your computer download the Vegas9 Pro editing demo.. Everything works for 30 days. You can import the files directly into vegas and edit them or convert them to a mac format..

There’s a whole slew of codecs that are installed with Final Cut Studio that are not part of Quicktime install. My guess is that they may involve licensing fees such that paying for FCS covers the cost. Keep in mind that XDCAM is a Sony, not Apple, codec.

I believe you’d find the same issue with DVCPro100 (aka DVCProHD). It’s part of FCS install and not part of Quicktime otherwise.

Also note that XDCAM Transfer, which is a Sony tool or Sony Log & Transfer plugin for Final Cut Pro are needed to wrap the the file to MOV.

JVC apparently had to license the codec from Sony so that JVC can create XDCAM files (both MP4 and MOV).

My guess it’s Sony, not Apple, holding the cards on this one.
Sony’s distribution format is the BPAV (which is why that’s your camera master) and that is the root to use in NLEs that use either MP4 directly, MXF, MOV.

[Scott Phillips] “That’s interesting but it only works for viewing like VLC. The ability to edit is what I need now”
    Had you already tried?
