I’m curious why no one has suggested Flash video. You can buy a great encoder for $39 (OnZ), the quality is great, it’s not blocked by corporate firewalls, downloads faster, and it’s universal.

Flash has its own issues, mostly an absurdly ignorant user bas on the administration side, folks who think Flash is the answer to everything.

but, yeah, Flash might be a viable solution for playback on a the PC. Might not be the desired interchange format for the client’s needs.

[walter biscardi] “Just curious why you would do this over a $99 plug-in?”

Um, probably doesn’t apply in all situations.

But we find having the (damn) PC around is super convenient for tons of stuff. Knowing that the WMP media from the (damn) PC is absolutely compatible with all other (damn) PCs is somehow comforting.

All those whackos coming through the door with PowerPoint and other Microsoft files get instant service, no file conversions or Mac Office discrepancies. It’s convenient, that’s all.

valid points for sure. I was just curious what your reasoning was.

Isn’t there a host program issue with flash? I can makea QT, WMV, MPEG-1 and my client double clicks it, it opens. With flassh, doens’t it have to be hosted, or authored for it to play natively on a machine?

No, not with swf files. Flash flv files must be embedded.

Umm, yeah, what DRW said. Hence the massive confusion about Flash.
But as a universal delivery codec, it rocks.

so, taking the Flash approach and getting back to the original question, how would you recommend a Mac/FCS user create FLVs for his client’s PC use?
