Character separation in text

In a similar circumstance I’m trying to animate text to slowly dissolve from one word to another (specifically – not random through out my time frame but just dissolve from one word to another).

Usually I would just create two layers and dissolve between them but where I need to do this 15 times during this particular animation I thought I’d try to figure it out with the text tool.

This has to be possible but the closest I’ve gotten is random text changing every frame. Any tips would be helpful.
