October 14, 2010 at 6:24 pmThis is mostly starting to make sense to me now. The uncompressed(?) 13.02 GB file is located in my Final Cut Pro Documents > Capture Scratch folder.
I take it that a primary reason for this two-part file size system, at least in the context of Final Cut, is that the larger file sizes would be unwieldy when editing in a timeline.
Thanks a lot Alex for your help.

October 14, 2010 at 6:41 pmIt’s not that the files are too large to edit with (in fact 13GB for an hour is pretty small) it’s just so you don’t go creating loads of large files if it isn’t necessary for them to ‘stand alone’ so to speak. You can’t use a reference file for long-term archive of a finished edit for instance as there is nothing for it to reference as soon as you delete the files in your scratch disk. As an example try creating a reference file of your edit, then move one of the files it references to a different folder and then open the ref file. You’ll see what I’m talking about.
