August 27, 2007 at 11:16 pmNot sure what this color red question means.
Convergent Design is a wonderful company that has many solutions for converting different format signals. For me it is a solid solution to stay completely digital transcoding to an all i-frame codec of my choice. AJA is also a wonderful company, but it is my opinion that staying completely digital is the best for keeping the quality of any signal.MP

August 27, 2007 at 11:36 pmI’ve been editing a long time. And you’d be surprised how many shades of red people call red. It’s a running joke amongst editors. It’s my sig.

August 28, 2007 at 12:47 am[hdfilmmaker] “However the audio out of the Sony is RCA? Do I want to convert from RCA to XLR(kona pigtail) or bring audio in through firewire? If I use the firewire, what settings are you using in FCP 6 for capturing the audio diff from video?”
Go to Markertek.com and order two RCA to XLR cables. That’s the cleanest and easiest way to do this. Bring your Component video and RCA audio directly to the Kona. No need to spend any extra money. But get the pre-made cables, don’t go using any converters and turnarounds to make it work, simply get a premade cable with the correct RCA and XLR connections on each end. That’s the cleanest. We have several of these cables here.
In our case we have the Kona 3 in our main suites so we only have digital inputs. So we have two AJA HD10AVA A/D Converters hooked up to our two Sony HDV decks. These take the Component video and RCA audio out of the deck and convert both to an HD-SDI stream.
Connecting the Component video / RCA audio directly to your LHe does the exact same thing. So you’re good there.

August 28, 2007 at 1:35 amJust my opinion but …..as much as I believe in AJA and love their products I simply could not recommend purchasing a product that is not the best possible solution and that costs more money. Please read up on Convergent Design before your next purchase.

August 28, 2007 at 1:49 pmI agree with researching the best possible solution that you can…
BUT…
The support you get from AJA is the best that you will find out there. Convergent Design has been very sketchy in my experience. I had lots of trouble getting answers when I contacted them about their products. AJA always pointed me in the correct direction with ANY of their products.
I apologize to hdfilmmaker… I overlooked that he has a Kona LHe. Follow Walter’s advice. You already have everything you need except for the RCA male to XLR female cables.
