    John,
The Tiff’s 32 bits per channel option in in the export window of Photoshop since a few years.
What I’m talking is about the Tiff which we are currently using in FC.
32b can mean 8b per channel in CYMK, or 8b per channel in RGB plus Alpha channel.
For us is meaningless that Tiff supports 32b per channel when FC supports only 8b.
When I said that “All of them hold the same 8b RGB” I wasn’t try to give any lesson about Tiff files, just to explain to Rob Grauer that he can use any of the familiar 8b RGB formats (PNG, Tiff, TG,..) to bring his graphics to FC with the same results.
I never thought Rob would be much interested in the possibility of printing 32b per channel CYMK pictures.
    Happy Lao New Year

I have also just started encountering issues importing TIF files w/ alpha channels. Have been doing it for years into FCP. What changed for me is I upgraded Photoshop from CS to CS5. The files exported from CS5 no longer import into FCP, but if I open the same Photoshop file in CS and export the same TIF, FCP is happy. Any clues as to why this has become an issue? What is CS5 doing that is different? I confirmed it is an 8 bit TIF. I’ve tried RGB and Grayscale modes.
