Buy FCP 7 as backup?

I was still on FCP 6.06 and waiting for “the next version to come out”. Couple days after X came out, I bought FCS 3 on eBay for $375. It’s a sealed Academic version but the ONLY difference is that you can’t update academic versions. Well, since you won’t be able to buy any more upgrades, who cares right? I really like the old FCP and it’s treated me well over the years so I’ll keep working on it while I also learn Avid (bought the crossgrade for $995) and Premiere (already had it with Production Premiuim that got for After Effects and Photoshop), and…yes…FCP X. it can never hurt to know as many tools as you can. I’d like to become NLE agnostic so I could work anywhere on anyone’s system or project.

This has been discussed but you can’t bank your business on FCP7 working on Lion right now.
There are no more updates on FCP7 and when Apple switches to Lion there will be problems with FCP7. There are always problems when converting OS systems. Normally updates fixed the issues but now instead of getting FCP 7.1.3 you’re stuck with 7.0.3 and a FCP7 that could be unusable.

Apparently I read this different. Apple said 7 will continue to work under Lion. This means – and I would argue this is now a legal obligation – that any point updates of Lion that break 7 will have to result in Pro Apps updates to fix 7.
Not saying it will be as well supported – but it will happen.
Frankly, I still run 7 under Leopard. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

Anyone know where I can buy a copy of FCP 7?? Like a few of you, I was running 6.0.6 and was waiting for the new version, just bypassing 7 altogether. Now that FCP X looks to be years away from being professional I’m thinking I should have 7 installed right away. No idea where to get it though, apple store doesn’t have it anymore… ideas?

I understand Promax in LA still is selling FCP 7.

eBay! You can even buy an academic version since the only difference is that you can’t upgrade it. Since there are no more “upgrades”, who cares!
