    [Dan Riley] “Compressor is best
when you need to save time, not when you need to make a great picture.”

Sorry, but I respectfully, though strongly, disagree with you Dan, and I agree with Jeremy.

Compressor contains Apple’s best compression engine, not simply Apple’s fastest, and it’s a much more sophisticated and controllable than Quicktime Conversion, and with multi-pass compression as well. There’s better perhaps, if you want to spend the dough for Episode or Sorenson, but within FCS2, Compressor is far and away the best Apple offers.

If you’re getting better results with QT Conversion you must be doing something wrong.

My first option would be H264 off-course. As second option I also agree with PhotoJPEG. However PhotoJPEG will make files much (very much) bigger than H264.
About Compressor (apart of being killing slow) I think that only beats other options when creating new pictures. I mean, when upsizing pictures or creating new frames when standard conversion (ie. PAL>NTSC).
    Cheers,

[Chris Babbitt] “I can afford a larger file size. Is there something better in Compressor?”

Elgato Turbo.264. Best $90 I have ever spent. Plug in the USB thingie, install the software, drop a file, choose a preset and go. This things beats Compressor any day. And it faster than lightning. I get anywhere from 20-60 frames per second with 720/24p DVCProHD footage.

I had a hard time believing it too. It really looks to good to be true, but it is. Shane wrote about it in his blog. https://lfhd.blogspot.com/2008/01/macworld-2008-wrap-up.html

The turbo.264 is GREAT, I have one for my G5 Tower and am considering getting one for my MBP. If you use the eyeTV to record TV on your computer like I do it is even more useful.

Funny that you should ask. I don’t think that I am but you are the second person on this forum to ask! Who knows, we could be, there are not that many of us. I am distantly related to Pat, never met him though.
