Beam effect, motion tracking and shape fill

The other post i linked to seemed ask and answer the same question as i have here, but it appears to do something entirely different.

I have also found this script witch seems to be another way to achieve what i’m after (by controlling individual points of a mask rather than using beams) but again, its not doing anything. I feeling pretty confused and stupid now. Is it really this hard?
