Abandon the Pro’s may of been strong statement and like I said I need to do my research to get all the facts straight.

From what I’ve been told by other FCP users it sounds like many Pro’s are disappointed. Is it true you can not set your sequence TC? I’m an old dog and follow Network and Studio delivery spec’s and having a program start at 1:00:00:00 or whatever specified is a must. Is it true you can not ingest or output to tape? I know Tape is dying but it’s not dead yet. Is it true Apple has stopped or about to stop supporting FCP7? Is it true NASCAR is moving out their 40 FCP work stations and switching to AVID? Is it true ESPN is considering switching their 2000 FCP systems to AVID? I’ve heard a bunch of reasons why FCPX can’t be used in a professional environment.

What I did not say in my earlier post was even-though I find it hard to believe Apple is abandoning the Pro’s I also think Apple has a plan and most likely a whole bunch of really cool features and the software will mature to accommodate a Pro’s needs. I can not figure out why they would stop selling and supporting FCP 7 when it has so many features the Pro’s require.

When I have time to devote to research I’ll be sure to stop here and read all the reviews. Considering the low cost I’ll most likely purchase and use it for what it’s good for.

You can’t change the TC of the timeline in X. You cannot lay back to tape with it either, so there’s little point in having the feature. You can export a QT though to open in FCP 7 or any other NLE for layback. You can capture from tape using any number of NLE’s or software supplied free by AJA, Matrox and BM, and just import the files into X. Then use that same software to make a tape to spec, starting programs at 1hour TC, etc. AJA’s software is called VTR Exchange.

I don’t know about ESPN, but I think the smart thing to do is wait. THe cost of upgrading/cross grading is insignificant compared to the cost of the learning curve that will be involved, and the lost productivity due to that learning curve. FCP X presents a learning curve, but it’s nothing compared to learning a track based editor like Avid, FCP 7 or Premiere.

After all FCP 7 will run on the next gen machines fine (it does on all of the i5 and i7’s right now), and it will run in Lion.. it’s not as if it gets turned off by X or anything of the sort.

FCP 7 is no longer going to be developed, so Apple quit selling it. Probably not the best idea. But most of the possible pro user base already owns the software. There is no dongle… There are copies of FCS 3 all over the place for sale too… Amazon has it, as do many VAR’s I hear. A shipment was sent to them not long ago. Any major installation like ESPN can still buy more stations if need be directly from Apple. Little guys like me can find it on Amazon or ebay, and at local VAR’s. Just not from Apple directly.

You’re right about one thing, it has extremely cool features and it’s just getting started IMHO.

Oliver Peters has a very nice blog post on the many features missing from FCP X that sums it all up very nicely, you can easily search for that with the search engine of your choice.

I’m not buying into the history lesson that so many others seem to be falling in line with. If you follow that logic, FCP will be ready for true professional use in 5 years so you’ll be holding on to FCP 7 for quite some time.

In the meantime, many of us are moving forward with other platforms that essentially drop right into our workflow. Out of the 220 attendees at our recent Atlanta Cutters group, 2 to 5 people raised their hands as having purchased FCP X.

As for the TC requirement, that’s still required for digital delivery, you still need to set your timecode properly for the file that’s being delivered to the network. So tape or file, you still need to be able to assign timecode, that’s quite the basic need.

I was thinking of many reasons I’d want to set my own start TC in a sequence aside from what the clients delivery spec’s require.

It’s nice that there are work arounds but why? I’d like my editing suite/software to include what I need to do a professional job and not depend on AJA for ingest, another for other parts of a job, etc.

I’m sure FCP X has it’s place, like most tools I’ll use the best tool for the job.

That’s the only thing you can do.

I beg to disagree with the development time.

Development of FCP X can and (according to Apple) will happen a lot sooner than before because it’s not carbonized code, Apple doesn’t need to get to a gold master of 6 applications just to release a new version of FCP, QuickTime isn’t it’s base, they don’t have to print DVD’s and manuals either. Cocoa code complies a ton faster than carbon did. So I’ll wager your suggestion of a 5 year wait is much more likely 2. FCP 7 for another couple of years when you have to use it isn’t such a big deal don’t think. And if Apple lets us down here, THEN I’d look at something else, if I actually need to at that time.

For that matter, the cost of all this software is so low that there’s little reason not to run Adobe, Avid, FCP 7, X and whatever else all on the same system. You just have to be careful with upgrades of OS etc… stay where they all work. Use the app that best suits the job. It’s not as if Apple is pulling the plug on 7 and we can’t open it any more… right?

[Michael Harrington] “I have hundreds of GoPro clips, some are long and all of them need to have in/out marks and it appears MPEG Stream clip does not support Batch Export with in/out marks.”
GoPro stuff works great in FCP.
Put all the clips in a FCP sequence and MM to the codec you want.
    It won’t make FCP crash.

Sometimes the easiest solution evades me. Excellent, I’ll give that a try.

“Is it true ESPN is considering switching their 2000 FCP systems to AVID?”

We don’t use FCP at all. We use all Avid and Quantel. Always have.
