March 17, 2009 at 9:36 pmBack in the early days of desktop publishing when the client said things like:
“Oh we don’t need to spend money on professional brochures anymore, Margie, my secretary, has Pagemaker so she can do them for us.”
I would reply:
“Great! Give her a stethoscope and see if she can handle your health plan.”
And desktop video is any different?

March 17, 2009 at 9:53 pmNick I agree. It used to be Powerpoint now it’s Video as the world turns.
I’ve run into this before and have killed it quite easily. I suggest they buy a Macbook because everyone knows that what Macs are for ( wink) and use IMovie as it’s simple and they can then assess their employees who are best suited to this kind of work. Also they don’t have to tie a lot of money up. If they want to go nuts buy a prosumer camcorder. I charge for consulting and a day of instruction. The caveat to the client is that this really should be left to professionals ( show him your best work)
When there boss finds out that there video look like cow poo, it’s the in house talent not the consultant . That same consultant also saved him thousands of depression dollars…
A nice touch is to find out how long the no talent employee spent $$$$ on the project.
May the force be with you 🙂

March 18, 2009 at 11:31 amThere seems to be a fashion cycle, with organizations rotating every few years between taking everything in house or hiring specialist facilities. Both choices come with pluses and minuses, of course.
I have set up a page in my “buyer’s guide” to try to help people looking into these in-house-or-professional choices. Some have reported it helpful. It’s at https://www.grapevinecommunications.co.uk/buyersguide/diy.html

March 18, 2009 at 6:06 pmGreat piece, but I often wonder ( no offense) if we are touting the wonders of video why communicate in print. To quote a famous Canadian “The media is the message”

March 18, 2009 at 11:27 pmSony Vegas is PC-based.
Pinnacle has a consumer editing app…I don’t find it terribly intuitive myself, but it sells a lot of units…
Canopus/Grass Valley has Edius…the fastest RT video editor on any platform, though the interface is a bit unique to them, somewhat like Vegas.
Premiere Elements is a pretty accessible software package.
Premiere Pro is the big brother of course and it has considerable capabilities.
You said you were familiar with Avid, and of course they make some PC-based editing options.
I don’t know if you want to drive them toward a more complex app to make your point about how sophisticated the process is…or lean toward a consumer app, which would restrict their capabilities and demonstrate the need for a more professional approach…
One thing is for sure…I doubt you’re the only person faced with a client asking for this sort of information.
