March 1, 2011 at 9:17 pmHi John:
Does it make a difference that I have system sounds disabled from within windows? (I thought this was standard practice). Set up this way, would windows ever have to switch to 44k to do anything? Thanks

March 1, 2011 at 9:20 pmOk, I see.
So if (as in earlier post) I have windows sounds disabled, I guess I could simply enable the on board sound chip, and not worry about hooking up speakers (if I leave Windows sounds disabled from within windows), and this should take care of the problem? I’ll give that a try when I get back to the studio. Thanks

If you’ve disabled all Windows system sounds then I guess that has the same effect. No, the device would not have to switch to 44K to play anything if you told Windows not to make a sound. Personally, I couldn’t use the computer this way. I like to hear a beep when I make a mistake. 😉
Since you have windows sounds disabled, why not deselect the PreSonus as the default device since a default device should not be needed with no sounds. It may be worth a try.

March 1, 2011 at 9:25 pmI know what you mean about not being sure if you could use the computer this way – I thought the same thing when I was told to do that years ago – but I did it – and honestly have never missed it, and now have gotten so used to it than when i use my laptop the windows sounds actually annoy me 🙂
Anyway – thats a great suggestion (deselecting it as the default device). I’ll give that a shot – and if that doesn’t work, I’ll try enabling the on board device also to see if that fixes things.
Thanks for the insight and suggestions.
Best,
ChrisThanks

March 1, 2011 at 9:28 pmYea, I mean your original error was:
“Warning: One or more audio playback devices do not support the current sample rate and/or bit depth. An unsupported media type was requested.”
Since the PreSonus absolutely supports 48K/16-bit, I’m guessing that it’s not being allowed to switch to 48K by some other application that is using it. You might want to open the properties of the PreSonus device when this error happens and see how it’s configured. My M-Audio Firewire 410 has an interface appplet and it tells you what sample rate it’s using at any particular point in time. I can use this to see what mode it’s in. The PreSonus must have the same thing.
I assume you are using the ASIO drivers for the PreSonus and not the Microsoft Mapper drivers. Is this true?

March 1, 2011 at 9:34 pmOK one more thing. I re-read your original post and I remember there is an order in which to change the sample rate. Try this:
- Change your Audio Device to Microsoft Sound Mapper.
- Change your Project Properties to 48K
- Change your Audio Device to PreSonus
I remember seeing this error when changing directly. If you temporarily select some other driver, change the sample rate, then switch back to the original driver, it asks the project what the sample rate is and adjusts accordingly.

March 1, 2011 at 9:38 pmHey John,
Yes – am using the ASIO drivers.
And Presonus also has that type of applet – and the weird thing is – when I have the focus on the Presonus UI applet, I can change it manually to 48k, and it takes, but the minute I put the focus on the Vegas window – it switches the sample rate in the presonus applet back to 44k. Thats why I thought it might be a setting somewhere inside Vegas that I needed to change, since it seemed that putting the focus on Vegas was switching the firestudio to 44k – as if Vegas was calling for 44k.Thanks

March 1, 2011 at 9:39 pmAah ok – that is one more thing I will try when I get back to the studio.
Thanks

March 1, 2011 at 10:09 pmThat is why I disable windows “sounds” perhaps that is why I don’t have that issue. But I would suspect that Presonus is more than able to handle it, considering I have never had that issue on other computers that still have their sounds enabled.
There are also, many reasons to have something better than a motherboard sound card.Scott Francis

March 1, 2011 at 10:14 pmHey Scott,
I too disable windows “sounds”.
The weird thing is – when I have the focus on the Presonus UI applet, I can change it manually to 48k, and it takes just fine, but the minute I put the focus on the Vegas window – it switches the sample rate in the presonus applet back to 44k. Thats why I thought it might be a setting somewhere inside Vegas that I needed to change, since it seemed that putting the focus on Vegas was switching the firestudio to 44k – as if Vegas was calling for 44k.Any thoughts? Do you experience this also by any chance?
Thanks
