April 15, 2012 at 2:01 pmThird party apps for fast import are plenty, any package that allows you to export to QT based on the normal qt install (and the codecs on your machine) will do the trick.
(check in QT pro, you can export to DNxHD…)But then you still have to import (but this is fairly fast)
If you really need speed, you can also re-wrap the QT’s into Avid MXF, so you can drag the media database in a bin, and have your clips, or use the media tool to get them in a bin (thus, no import needed!)
My ‘offloader’ tool can do this, and is free for the Windows version.
(it is intended to offload cards on the shoot and be ready to edit when you get home. Make sure you have enough battery power on your laptop!)But if you can afford to wait (i prefer waiting overnight, it does not hurt when my machine is busy when i’m asleep), import in AVID either trough AMA or a ‘normal’ input (that i prefer, it does a better job on levels IMHO, but that may depend on your avid version), is just fine.
If your machine crashes on this, you’ve got a corrupt / rotten / broken install / os / machine / ram whatever.
It should work just fine, do a re-install of avid, if that does not work do a re-install of your os, if that does not work check your RAM yadda yadda.
(bottom line, it works for most of us, so your machine is to blame 🙂hth,
Bouke
