I’ve heard from many different people including plugin writer Graeme Nattress that the 10-bit uncompressed workflow in final cut pro is broken, or rather that there are things about it that are broken and that 8-bit is just fine.

Then I hear others like myself that don’t seem to have any problems, technically or visually with 10-bit.

I realize there are some who believe the extra 2-bits are a waste, but the facility I manage has been 10-bit since our first digibeta deck and smoke* system arrived some 10 years ago. So regardless of the benefits or lack or waist of space, 10-bit SD or HD is what this post house is all about.

My question out there to those of you with 8 and 10 bit uncompressed capability……

Are you having any problems with Final Cut Pro’s 10-bit workflows?

    (I’m running 5.04 btw)

I think some more bugs in 10bit got fixed in the new release, but it’s hard to keep track. There were certainly issues back with FCP5. There are still issues with some FXscript commands not functioning correct, but it’s only geeks like me that find them (or Joe).

I fall into the “no problems” category”. I work exclusively in 10 bit SDI in and out and haven’t had any problems to date. I am still with version 5.1.2 since it works fine.

    Graeme,
Would these bugs be noticiable in a process to treat DV footage with some chroma rebuilding and color correction?
Basically is what I do. I set my DVCam footage in a 10b Unc, and y set your Chroma Sharpener (I’ve just purchsased but I haven’t had time yet to test it well) or the MB deartifacter, before to pass the CC3W.
Do Sheer make a better job?
    Thanks,
    Rafael

Chroma Sharpener is 10bit safe, but the G Nicer isn’t. That’s one of the reasons I wrote the Sharpener 🙂 Sheer is uncompressed, just smaller files. No quality difference.

But do Sheer10b got the same bugs than the Apple10b Unc? If so, is a matter of the QT “10b codecs”?
    Thanks again Graeme.

It’s not the codec that has an issue though, it’s the 32bit float rendering pathway that has had the issues.
