yeah, agreed, and on a final note, is saw a short indie film last night, in the credits it read “edited on a mac dual core g5 final cut pro 5”

not only are they telling me the softwear, but their comp stats.

i sometimes see type of cameras put in credits, or film stock, but usaly if they got free stuff…..somehow this in editing has turned into an emotional debate.

    why oh why!?

As an FCP user this video was kind of annoying! I have been using AVID for a while too. Personally i do not care about making bins, how many bins does one actually make per project? And if they do it probably takes up less than half a percent of the the total time editing the project. Same with the capture stuff, does not mean anything different strokes for diffrent folks. I totally prefer FCP do not get me wrong but i am not stupid either. Jeff u totally gloss over the editing experience basically u showed an “assistants” view of the avid vs fcp debate. How come u showed how u can shift select the tracks on and off in AVID and not in FCP were u seriously trying to hide the fact u can’t do that in FCP? I wish u could, coming from an After effects environment the lack of that function sux. Closest we have i think is hold option down and click on a track to turn off all bar the one u have clicked then click that one to turn it off. U also glossed over the zoom in/out timeline function in FCP u have to press z to get the zoom tool then click on the timeline. In avid it is the up and down arrow keys definatley much easier. But u sped that part up anyway in FCP – rudeness. The waveforms example – oh my god! try doing the waveforms in FCP in an actual project not just 3 clips it is not very fast at all. Anyway i was more interested in the editing debate anyway that is the REAL debate. My main peeve with AVID is having to lasso clips to move them as opposed to FCP where u can select all clips left or right of the mouse by using the track forward or track back tool. U could of showed that and u would have not had to sped up ur examples.
    rant over

Just to let you know, he posted this in the FCP forum too, and none of us really went for it. We all knew that the Avid was going unusually slow. Well, most of us either use both or are Avid converts.

Funny that he hasn’t shown his face again.

Hey everyone. I figured I’d let this one marinate before I replied. It seemed to get nice and juicy. Let me respond to some of the concerns by everyone:

    1. Promoboy. My Mac and Avid are approved and up to spec to work with each other. MAC OSX 10.4.3 Dual 2Ghz 2.5 GB Ram / AVID Adrenaline 1.8.2 Both FCP and Avid are installed on the same machine with the same #of programs running.

    2. Kevin. I’m sorry I wasn’t born in the 60’s and started editing in 1986. That’s not my fault. I know editors who’ve been on Avid since v.1.x and have the same complaints. My point is that Avid would be a great program if it would play with Mac’s a little better. Every tech support call I’ve been on with Avid, they just throw their hands up when I tell them I’m on a Mac. I’ve had 100 more bugs with this thing compared to FCP. I was hoping if the right person saw this vid (I sent it to Avid directly too) that they would address these issues in the next Mac release.

    3. Tae: If you want to come over and give me an Avid lesson, be my guest. NONE of the clips are sped up. You wish.

    4. W. Busby: That link you found, check the date. “Oct 8, 2003” That was 3 years ago, and a totally different problem. Swapping out my entire G4 was a pain in the ass just to make the App work.

    5. Tristen. I’m trying to just edit something. But I’m waiting around for bins to open all day.

    6. Liam. You have a point with a couple things. Track selecting in Avid is nice compared to FCP. But FCP is not trying to do the same thing. It’s more hands on with the move and blade tool, two different approaches. I prefer Avids, but I get used to FCP’s methods. The timeline zoom issue. Just map your keyboard like I did. And again, NOTHING was sped up. The waveform thing was not a big deal and I probably should have left it out. Moot point.

    7. Shane. Read above.

    Jeff

p.s. If anyone could put me in front of a Mac Adrenaline without these problems, I’d love to come by and check it out.

After reading all the posts on the FCP and Avid forum concerning this issue I think everyone will agree on two basic points.

    1. jeffs Avid might be a little slow.
    2. Those on the avid forum might want to take a lesson on how not to be a bunch of jerks from those on the FCP forum. I mean really, I think you guys got a little too defensive in there. From my understanding it was clear that Jeff’s only point was to show that there is a difference in basic interface convienence, and a giant pricetag difference. Thats all. The way you were making fun of him made me feel like I was in 6th grade again. Grow up.

    Hello Jeff

Yeah, funny video, really! You just forget to mention that Avid is connected to Lanshare/Unity-system (there is those green marks in bin-window) and FCP is operating locally. That makes things look bit different or what you think? I really know also those Mac bugs in Avid, but here Paris we have good tech support, so it would good to give some response for tech support.

Jeff, I noted the date. My simple point was:

It worked at one point in time. Then it started giving you trouble. You swapped out your Mac for another, then it worked. Which means to say, it’s a hardware problem, not software.

    I’m done here 🙂

Hey yall. Thanks for all the responses. Here are some final thoughts:
I never should of labeled the video, “Avid vs FCP”
It should have been labeled, “Why do basic functions in Avid seem slower than in FCP”
I probably would have gotten way more contructive criticism.
I failed to mention my Avid is hooked up to a Unity. I’m from the school of thought, that if it costs more, then it should run better. Maybe not.
There are a many ways to compare FCP and Avid, laptops, BOBs, software versions, shared storage etc…
I really don’t care what I edit on, I just want it to be fast. That said, I’m pulling the video. Thanks for the feedback and I’m going to try make my Avid run a little smoother now.

    later.
    Jeff
