[Ross Spears] “Looking online I am now wondering whether Thunderbolt drives will even run on a Mac Pro computer!? Does anyone know? “

No. You can’t use a thunderbolt drive on a Mac Pro. No if ands or buts. The adapter you bought will allow you to run a FW800 drive on a thunderbolt system, not vice-versa. Return it. Get yourself something like a GRAID with either a firewire 800/USB3 port or an eSATA/firewire 800 port. If FW800 is fast enough for you, just use that. If you need faster throughput, get yourself either an eSATA or USB3 adaptor from a place like OTW Computing, and have someone who knows what they are doing install it. No offense. Its simple enough, but you are mid-project, and this all seems relatively new to you.

What about installing two more internal drives in the Mac Pro? There are slots for them. If so, would you recommend any particular types?

Sure. You can do that. I have an internal RAID as well. Hitachi, Seagate, Western Digital. I’m not sure what’s hot these days, but match two or three and put them in. I DO like having external RAIDs, though.

Thanks for the suggestions. And yes, I admit that this is relatively new to me, as AVID, computers, and filmmaking in general keep shifting. I started making films back in the late 60’s using a pair of rewinds and a moviescope, graduated to a movieola, then a Steenbeck flatbed, bought my first AVID in 1998 and used that until 2009 (an offline AVID for $50,000), have now graduated to an $5000 AVID that will do HD, etc. It’s been fun to try to keep up with the vocabulary, the models, the workflows, the outlets, and all the ways to capture and organize words, music, and images! Believe me, if it weren’t for helpful experts like you and your colleagues at CC to talk me through all the problems, …. well. I am very appreciative!

No problem. If you are going for the internal RAID option, do get yourself at least 7200rpm drives.
