May 30, 2007 at 11:54 amYes – I definitely agree – I’ve done dozens (probably at least 100) of tests at 720×480. I had only tried the 853×480 size when you mentioned it in your post above. It actually looks pretty good on a computer monitor played back.
No matter what I do, I end up with SD DVD’s that have edge scaling/tearing/jags. My most ‘successful’ experiment was taking DVCPRO HD 1080 60i footage, creating a 1920×1080 master (for blu Ray etc), then putting that back on an HDV tape (1440×1080) – not my preference – and playing that back into Edius via 480 component from a z1 camera. It provided the smoothest results and retained a decent amount of color. It’s also incredibly time consuming and a lossy process. I can’t seem to get any software solution to mimic what I’ve seen with hardware downconversion (in camera, Aja mini boxes and Z1 after HDV conversion).
It’s been a very frustrating process trying to get this beautiful HD footage to look good on an SD DVD. I would love any opportunity to send you footage, have a short discussion, etc. I wanted to pick up another 2000 (I actually have interest running on money alotted for it), but can’t buy it until this is resolved. It’s also getting me behind in my current stuff, and making me nervous about how I shoot the current jobs. Any opportunity to discuss this with you is infinitely appreciated (www.renvid.com). I’ve tried everything I could, including calling around the nation (Panny, Canopus, etc). I feel like you’re one of my last hopes. Thanks very much as always.

May 30, 2007 at 3:36 pmWell, first of all, don’t panic because (as you’ve seen) the problem is definitely solvable, you can make awesomely beautiful downrezzes from DVCPRO-HD footage. I don’t know what the particular problem is with your footage, but I do know that it’s solvable.
Post one of your MXFs somewhere and let me download it and author a DVD image; I’ll send it back to you and you can burn it and see what the results are like and if it’s better than the results you’ve been getting.

May 30, 2007 at 5:56 pmThanks for the generous offer. I ftp’ed a short clip up to Canopus to their site and it took 7-10 hours (had to do it repeatedly because the server would reset, the files would delete after 24 hours, etc) – and that was 400-600mb. I’ve got a short section of examples put together exported back to P2 from Edius that’s 4 minutes – around 3.5 Gig.
Is there any way I could put it on a DVD and send it somewhere for you to retrieve? You can PM from info at (www.renvid.com). Otherwise, I’m going to the HD expo next week in Chicago. If you were going to be there, I could deliver it.
Otherwise, I don’t have an FTP, but I can try to figure something out. I just know it would get time/space consuming based on the content.
Will defer to your suggestions & wishes. Thanks again for your generosity, and for your words of optimism. Your assistance is enormously appreciated.
