Activity Forums AJA Video Systems Audio Level Question…

    Our opinion…

We do not wish the underlying operating system to have any control on audio i/o. We also believe that FCP itself should not have any control on audio input on digital streams. If you have an analog input then fine let the FCP input gain slider tweak for some incorrect gain in the analog path. We use a mix of AJA and Blackmagic cards and prefer the way the Blackmagic does its thing – unity gain.

We certainly did not like the current bug that renders the PDF at the AJA web site inaccurate when using FCP 5 and Tiger. The bug being that the sound preferences slider resets to 50% and does not stay at their 67% to provide unity gain.

You may also be aware that should you use the Kona 2 card for general sound output(youmay use motion, etc and want to hear those applications thought the card)then the volume controls on the keyboard, etc, control the audio gain of the output and require resetting to 67% before am output to tape. Well, this happens with us anyway.

..and our final word on all of that. We are very happy that they have put a check box in the Kona 2 control panel to allow a unity gain on input. We also pray that they can implement a check box for output as well. Give the customer the option of having the operating system control the gain.

The Aurora products use a unity gain setting as well. For what it is worth I would prefer to see unity gain in the KONA 2 driver (or at least a checkbox as described)

It sounds like they are on this path anyway (thank goodness).

What you have written makes no sense.

“We do not wish the underlying operating system to have any control on audio i/o. We also believe that FCP itself should not have any control on audio input on digital streams.”

    1 The OS controls everything.
2 FCP controls what the OS allows it to control. It’s the Apple way.
3 FCP must control the input gain on all inputs, why just should analog be different?

“The bug being that the sound preferences slider resets to 50% and does not stay at their 67% to provide unity gain.”

That is simply wrong. the input slider resets to 50% the output slider stays at 67% and does not move.

“Give the customer the option of having the operating system control the gain.”
“We do not wish the underlying operating system to have any control on audio i/o.”

Well which one do you want?

I just want the FCP gains levels to override the OS beep levels, and to accept what the KONA is sending to it.

    Fred,

This looks like it may be an FCP issue rather than a simple KONA issue.

Check out this post in the Aurora forum.

    Fred,

Let’s just say that AJA seem to have recognised the fact that some people require unity gain and currently offer that ability with a modified driver.

The check box in their beta driver may have been included to fix the bug of the os slider being forced to 50% but we will certainly lobby for them to keep it.

I am happy that you are having success with your i/o and that it does what you desire. It doesn’t for us and a few other people it seems.

    Regards, Matt
