Audio hiss removal?
Posted by Robert Maier on October 20, 2020 at 6:20 pmI have some dialogue that was recorded way too low. I can bring it up to a good level, but lots of electronic hiss/white noise. Can’t use the noise gate, because it almost equals volume of voice when cranked up. Wondering if there’s a modern miracle cure for this…

October 20, 2020 at 6:48 pmHi Robert
If the G man is offering, go for it !
Now, if you want to go DIY and you don’t want to buy the really good software then Audacity is the way to go.
Very important ! Always remove the hisses and the noises BEFORE doing anything else.
Here’s a link to one of many noise reduction tutorials for Audacity.

October 20, 2020 at 6:57 pmHi again
One other thing. If you’re doing dialogues, once you’re all done and happy with your audio, I would recommend passing it thru Levelator. It does wonders for voice-overs. It normalizes your track in a way that makes it way more pleasent for the viewer to follow the narrative. (bonus is that it’s a freeware!)

October 20, 2020 at 7:16 pmWhat Graham said… I use it weekly. Can’t afford the advanced, but the basic is way sufficient.

October 20, 2020 at 10:53 pmI use iZotope RX too. It has saved my bacon on so many occasions when field recording in hostile (noisy) environments. It’s worth every cent. Also, I never use the noise gate for any projects. Having audio which just disappears completely sounds almost as terrible as the noise itself!

October 21, 2020 at 4:09 pmI was hoping for something in Vegas 15. But I guess a 3rd party is the way to go. Thanks for the suggestions.
