Apple has already put something like this into use…Compressor 3 has the ability to take a file with multiple 2:3:2:3 cadence breaks and correctly extract 23.98 from it.

Since it was filed in 2006, I assume this is just due diligence in trying to protect a piece of code that probably took some time to write before the Compressor 3 release.

[bouke vahl] “Or, isn’t there a hardware card out there that enables you to remove pulldown on ingest? (Would be my option if i lived in NTSC land…) “

Yes but it’s just as tricky (if not more so) to set it up as Cinema Tools. You have to make sure all of your captures start on an A frame. Then if you are doing an offline/online situation it can get quite messy after you edit and try and recapture, as all of your edits probably don’t happen on an A frame. Highly annoying. I don’t understand why capture card companies can’t make this a transparent process. There is obvious meta data that gets recorded to tape and capture cards should be able to decipher this data and remove pulldown. If this process can be done via firewire, I can’t see why something couldn’t be written to recognize it in the SDI stream. It must not be that easy as I am sure someone would have done it already. It does work for the Varicam, though, but the flagging system was completely designed around it. It is a brilliant system if you ask me.
