    What’s preventing you from live switching the event? I would discuss options with the client.

    We are diligently working toward getting this show to be live switched. I feel like this is going to happen in the near future.

    FYI, during the edit last night, Plural Eyes worked!! Yay! It took a week but Red Giant tech support got back with me and provided a suggestion. Hopefully, this fix will stick and life can move on.
    The fix had to do with the naming convention and path of the project.

    greg janza – I have been following this post and I too have H264 files that are hard to work with in multi camera.

    What is the most efficient way to work with the files to transcode please ?

    Transcoding H264 into either Pro-res or DNxHD/HR will greatly increase overall Premiere performance. This used to be potentially problematic because of the large file sizes created by these formats but with storage being cheap it’s now a non-issue.

    There is always a render tax involved. You either take the time to convert to an editable format beforehand or have a painfully long render time at the end.

    The best thing you can do, on a Mac at least, is to get EditReady and have it re-wrap AVCHD into single QuickTime (MOV) files. This is really fast because it’s not transcoding, it’s simply re-wrapping. This takes the AVCHD content out of the directory setups and gives you a simple *single* file to work with. And if clips are spanned over multiple MTS files, it will combine those as well.

    On a Mac, if you do any amount of significant work with AVCHD, EditReady is a must-have.

    Otherwise, if you have FCPX, you can also import AVCHD into it and it will do the same thing, then you can pull the resulting QuickTimes out of the library bundle. However, FCPX will rename them all, EditReady keeps the original naming convention (not that it’s much better, 00001.MOV for example).

    There is no need to be transcoding AVCHD to ProRes. Sure, hard drives are cheap, but once you’ve done a lot of these projects, it can add up. I have a single client who has over 30TB of footage. Not so cheap at that level.

    On a powerful system like the iMac from last year, transcoding is a waste of time.

    Here is an update concerning the Plural Eyes 4.

    Audio drift is the biggest issue I get with these one hour plus long AVCHD files. Plus there is 10 cameras worth of these.

    Someone advised using EditReady to rewrap these 7 or so .mts files per camera into one quicktime. And it is great advice!

    EditReady will rewrap as it transfers the SD card to the media drive, adding no conversion time.

    Now, the sequence has 10 single qt files and a master audio file. There is still some sync issues which vary show to show. Plural Eyes now works much better, I believe, because instead of trying to sync 70 or so individual files, it is now just working with 10 video and 1 master audio. The audio drift fix is the ticket and “knock on wood” the most solid solution to date. Plural Eyes can be flaky though, it hangs up, or error codes and I have to jump through some hoops to make it work.

    Anyway, just sharing for those who are caring…
