Accustomed as I am to the traditional ‘speculative’ post ribbing here, it does seem like a pretty stupid time to buy a Mac Pro. Clearly, updated machines will be out in the next few months, and I would recommend anyone wait at the moment.

No one has a crystal ball, especially with Apple releases, but well…

Yes, wait. Because when the new 12-core Mac Pros come out, all the cool kids will snap them up as quickly as Steve can pump them out. Then the market will be flooded with used, but otherwise completely capable 8-core machines that you’ll be able to buy from them for an absolute STEAL.

The question I don’t see here yet is what is your budget? If your plan is to wait for the next gen machine, you should expect to spend between $5,000 and $6,000 U.S. if you want the new “top of the line” machine once you put in all the RAM, graphics card, and other goodies. The 2.93 Octo Core with 16GB RAM prices at $6399 U.S. with no other additions today.

If you look at the Apple Mac Pro Page today, you’ll see that the Quad Core machine is the cheap one and the Octo Core Machine is the expensive one. So if a new machine comes out, expect that the Octo Core machine will be the cheap one and the new machine will slide into the new price points, which could very well be even higher than the Octo Core starting point.

So what is the amount of money you are expecting to spend on the new machine? I always budget $6,000 when planning for a new Mac Pro and $9,000 if that machine includes a new AJA Kona 3.

If your budget is less than $4,000 you most likely would not get a next gen machine anyway. You would most likely be in the price range of an “older model” Octo core when the new ones are released.

Thankfully, I’m loving and very happy with my current late ’08 Mac Pro, but I have been waiting to upgrade the graphics card depending on the release of a new Mac Pro. I can’t justify spending $349 for a graphics card that’s older (I believe I read by 1 year) than the last revision to the Mac Pro line. It’s the last part to my Mac Pro that I need to upgrade (already did hard drive and RAM) and it’s very frustrating not being able to just shop for any high end graphics card. Oh well….
