February 16, 2014 at 8:04 amThat’s good work Steve, and yes I’ve done the very same too. However it doesn’t and wont give what the OP was after. Out of focus on stuff passing in front of the target, while the target remains sharply in focus and the background, behind the target remains out of focus:-
Camera >> out of focus foreground >> Target Sharp Focus >> out of focus background
…. all while panning the shot.
And to add, the foreground is so way out of focus that it is as if the objects “floating” past are almost transparent too. Now that is a result of the Circle of Confusion only available from the optics of lens.
Again, Steve, nice work and it is as far as I can take NB “Rack Focus”.
I’ve got some Optical Rack focus work I’ve done. I’ll try and dig it out and upload here……
Cheers

February 16, 2014 at 8:20 amWell actually i never had recommended Newblufx rack focus to the OP,
that has to be done in camera. I was only addressing the fact that Newblue rack focus can give a bit better result than what u posted and overall decent results on certain kind of shots.Steve Rhoden

February 16, 2014 at 10:47 pmStill, one could get a similar effect with some good compositing.

February 17, 2014 at 3:18 amhey so – if I was to record some slowly moving nice out-of-focus objects in the foreground (with a blue screen background?) and then overlay them with my sharp, in focus subject… would that probably do something to that renaissance track? But then there’s all the gentle mirroring going on and stuff, I guess the sony mirror event effect could possibly do some of that… gosh i don’t know 🙂

February 17, 2014 at 3:12 pmLooks to me like they are filming through a stained glass window. To simulate this effect in post editing…the only thing I could think would be to use parented multiple tracks, generated colors, event masks, blur effects (of different settings) and parent track motion to move it across the subject.
