Although my background as a DP is mostly film & HD, this past year I worked extensively with the DVX100A with three camera set ups in four TV shows shooting literally hundreds of hours under many conditions. I asked my camera crew to make a list of improvements they would like to see adapted to the HVX-200, as the network that hires us is considering making an investment purchasing the cameras in the near future. Here are the most relevant requests:

he he- I think the point everyone is missing is that it’s too late for these sorts of requests. Camera is done- end of story.

Yes, Noah, but it’s never too late for a wise product manager to make note of which features to consider including in a future model.

    All the best,

Very true- I was going to say these are excellent suggestions for next gen cameras. Perhaps we’ll see them on the D5 prosumer camera in 2010. 🙂

Yes, they should keep their ears open as decisions on whether to buy this camera or another will be based on how they listen to our needs. This network in particular, asked for our advise before they go out to buy multiples cameras from a manufacturer.

Noah, if the camera is completely finished in design inside-out, why there so many questions unanswered still about this camera? I was under the impression that they were still listening

I suspect there could be a little wiggle-room here and there in terms of minor tweakbut most of the work is done and Panasonic is releasing final information as it becomes . Don’t forget that Jan has been on these boards for years. I know for a fact that some of the HVX design features were due in part to past comments from the DVX100 boards. And also remember that it takes years to bring these kinds of products to market. It’s a very long road map and we’re only now seeing the very end of it publically for the HVX200.

I understand and the release should not be slow down. Some of our suggestions were software related (framing guides, ND, Kelvin changes, battery icon, and perhaps slave time code) and maybe it could be tweak, I don

That I don’t know. The thing is that the original DVX100 was solidly engineered. I’ve got one and never had reason to upgrade to the A variant. The HVX200 will be as good as can be when it ships. Whether there’s a revision or not is impossible to predict. And there’s always something better around the corner in this biz.

I don’t expect to see the DVX100 revised again. It’s doing very well in its category and there’s not a whole lot more they can do to it without a major change. And that’s what the HVX is for.

    Hi,

Panasonic is listening but some features can not be added to prosumer camera.
Jan and Panasonic engineers came to Abelcine Tech NY and presented camera before NAB. They also took notes on improvements that can be done and one of them was better tripod plate that unfortunately breaks sometimes on DVX. Defintely you will see improvements but as I said this is prosumer camera and unfortunately not all requested feauteres can be implemented.
    Thank you,

Thank you for your responses, I now that a lot has being improved; I was basically exposing the areas that my crew (and I) felt could make a better camera based on-the-field usage.
The strange thing about these pro-sumer cameras is that, since they have become professional tools for broadcast productions, the requirements requested are similar to the ones we expect at the higher end
It is going to be hard to satisfy everyone, because the HVX200 provides a lot of options but with new tape-less technology. While I love it, I already have noticed some resistance from my clients on the concept not using tape, as they perceived (wrongly I think) flash memory and hard-drive as fragile storage devices.
For the reality TV-documentary and live events shows, were the DVX100 has a big market already, tapes from multiple cameras provides an enormous amount of hours per show on the cheap. For this market to jump on the new camera, Panasonic will have to address the issue of cost and minutes on the P2 cards. The expectation (from one of my clients at least) is to get DVCPRO 50 quality in exchange of the investment, otherwise they will rather keep the DVX100

[Carlos] “Real Manual exposure: Many times we would like to keep the exposure at the 2.4 -2.00 levels and the camera overrides the manual setting, changing up and down, the exposure. I don
