Another friendly poll. Would you like bigger chipsin the Panasonic AG-HVX200 ?
Posted by Paul Ullah on April 30, 2005 at 8:19 pmOne major set back in image quality in my opinion will be the 1/3 inch chip.
1. Do you want a bigger chip?
2. How much extra would you be willing to pay for a bigger chip?

April 30, 2005 at 8:37 pmI think you’re talking about a P2 Varicam. I’d like one too, but doubt I could afford it.

April 30, 2005 at 10:00 pmThe chips will be 1/3″. That’s set in stone. If you want larger chips, Panasonic has already teased about the next camera that will be 2/3″, removable lens, etc. I don’t know if it’ll be the anticipated P2-VariCam or not. Undoubtedly it will cost significantly more. IINM, the cheapest 2/3″ camera on the market is probably the new P2-based SPC700, at about $13,000 for the body alone (plus of course you buy your lens separately).

May 1, 2005 at 5:44 pmIs this one of those trick questions like “If my Dad had been a woman, I could have called him ‘Mom,’ but he wasn’t and so I get to call him, ‘Dad'” kinda thingies, Paul???
;o)
The chip set on this design got locked in its engineering design long before we added this forum. Any debate as to the merits of bigger chips will have to await another camera altogether. This, as the smaller chips are the domain of the AG-HVX200.
If you want the bigger chips in a Panasonic camera in 2005, then you will need to consider the Varicam.

May 2, 2005 at 12:14 amAs has been stated, small chips are the very reason why this camera is costing $6000 (well, that and a fixed lens). The last time I was at a trade show here in NYC, I spoke to Panasonic and was told that they are planning P2 versions of the varicam, so we can all look forward to that. Actually, I was told a “direct to disk” version, but I took that to mean P2.
At the very least, thinking about a P2 varicam will help get some of the more disturbing pseudo-Oedipal images that Ron’s post has put into my head. All the overtime billing my therapist gets this month, I’m forwarding to you, Mr. Lindeboom.

May 2, 2005 at 2:04 amDitto Ron, these sort of questions are a waste of badwidth I’m afraid to say. You can be assured that the HVX200 is already set in concrete, the plastic molding dies are been constructed and the manual written. These sort of changes (CCD and lens) don’t happen in the last few months before shipping. I’m told we will have PAL units here in Australia by September.
