Ah — I see. Then continuity between the sections isn’t an issue … just seamless wrapping around each section.

And we have the same number of LEDs at the top of a section as at the bottom, but they will be spaced farther apart at the bottom of each section, no? Hmm … how to map that …? If you don’t mind distorting things so they’re wider at the bottom, then simply placing animations on the ziggurat map would work.

Otherwise, to make rectangles look like rectangles on the tree, they should look like top-heavy trapezoids on the ziggurat, I’d think. You could do that with corner pin, I guess. Maybe then, you could just use the offset (or motion tile) effect to mirror-tile the animation at the ends …?

yep, i think there will be problems with seamlessness (that’s probably not a word, but you know what i mean) with this diagram.

i see problems with the polar coordinates technique and mapping like this. with polar coordinates, going from polar to rectangular, your image will get ‘stretched’ to the edges of a rectangular shape. by your diagram, much of the information near those edges will be dropped from the final wrapping of the tree.

it would have been nice if they had used a simple cylindrical projection to wrap the tree… you would have had significant pinching at the top, but seamless animation would have been much easier.

since it appears to be a ‘tiered’ or segmented cylindrical projection, each left and right edge of each tier needs to match not just the left an right edges of the tier, but also the tier below and above it… i think i would try to work with designs that had a more random pattern to try and hide the seams…
