Yeah, if you watch the little movie on AJA, Nick Rashby says the codec is in the hardware. Sweet for acceleration.

[JeremyG] “LTC in and out. Hopefully that means FCP can run in non controllable device mode, and be able to capture from a source (like a camera) without RS-422 or a deck. That would be way sweet and extremely useful. A truly portable capture station with ProRes. I could have used that over the past two days!

That will be the first thing I ask them tomorrow at their booth,
assuming I can find someone available to ask.
This is really needed for those of us that do multicam work and want
Hard Disk recording with simultaneous timecode in the field.

This is exactly what I was thining about this cool box: a field solution to capture DVCProHD-like quality straight in from HD SDI cameras like the Canon H1 that we use. It would be great to stay out of HDV altogether.

Note it’s not a truly portable solution, as it doesn’t do batteries.

Now, I wonder how we can integegrate this with a Firestore device or a harddrive that can handle the Pro422. (besides a Macbook Pro…still not keen on dealing with a laptop to record.)

This opens a lot of ideas…

So I guess this means the IO forum will really come alive again. Any word on whether the Kona 3 firmware can be upgraded to “imbed” the ProRes 4:2:2 codec as on the IO HD or is that even necessary? Maybe just a driver upgrade instead?

I’m guessing here, but I don’t think the other Kona products need to do this. I think the IO HD needs to compress realtime FIRST because then the signal is traveling down FW800. With a dedicated card, the bandwidth would be fine to do uncompressed until software…then pick your codec like you do now, only pick the Pro422, if desired.

Not sure I’m correct on this, but it makes sense. AJA will have to release additional support for the Codec, but I would think this is going to happen.
