February 22, 2017 at 4:38 pmI was trying everything same as you, but i found the solution by accident ????
Try to :
Play RAM Preview (NOTE: YOU MUST do this via Menu->Composition->Preview -> RAM PREVIEW)
Then your composition preview should start to play automatically.
To enable the sounds just click any point of playing preview.
It’s not intuitive, but worked for me ! Try this. Why you need to play preview via menu? Because if you start it with button on the rightside (in Standard Viewport) ,
then clicking on playing preview will only stop your video. -

Try that…you know that audio is deactivated by default in AE, in Render and everything else…

November 1, 2017 at 6:19 pmSince I updated to after FX 2017 CC my audio hasn’t been previewing. I have checked my Audio Hardware preferences. I have checked that none of my audio is muted. I have checked that the audio meters are fine. I have tried importing different types of audio, but nothing works and this is really frustrating as I really need to finish this project and I cannot work deaf.
Please help someone!!!!

April 2, 2018 at 8:15 pmI am having the same problems. I have checked all Audio settings, including Composition (Preview), but in CC2018 Ae, it only then offers options “Play Current Audio” or “Audio”. I clicked both, still no sound. There is also no “sound” icon to the left of the mp3 file. I’ve clicked the audio icon in the right panel by preview, still no sound. But, I am getting sound on Google and with all my other files.

When you try to play the audio, do you see activity in the audio meters? If yes then:
Check your Preferences > Audio Hardware, and make sure that AE is outputting to the same device that your system is using, and that it is not muted.
fixed it for me!
