I am suggesting creating new user settings from scratch and saving a copy on a CD, that way you will always have an uncorrupted copy to re-install.
Seems to work well here, but your milage may vary.

I forwarded your gripes to Engineering, in hopes they start to clean up some of these problems. You’d think on a 2.x release, a lot of the new bugs and goofiness would start going away. Hopefully they do now.
